Photo Project: Off The Record

Larry Lourcey

Hi and welcome to my blog!I do my best
to keep things updated and give you a look at things happening behind the scenes here at Lourcey Photography. Although I've been a professional photographer for over 20 years, I'm also semi-famous for my pizza and bread making. So follow along and enjoy the adventure. And don't be afraid to leave a comment and say hello!

Anyone Remember Records?

The era of the vinyl LP is pretty much behind us. Sure, there are a few die-hard collectors and DJs who still covet records, but by-and-large, the music industry has left them behind.

Remember when you were a kid and you got a cool new album for Christmas? It was always obvious what it was from the unusual, flat shape. You would put the record on the turntable and hear a second or two of “crackle and pop” then the music would kick in. You just don’t get that with a CD.

The Art

Another aspect that is lost on modern music is the album cover. Many albums are downloaded or at best, printed to CD. The once great 12×12 album cover is now a small 5×5 CD – or even a one inch square image on a computer screen. I thought it would be great to bring back the album cover with a new photographic project this year.

Introducing the “Off The Record” Project

The project will consist of a series of portraits, done in the style of iconic album covers. It may not be your favorite album or even your favorite band, but you will probably recognize the cover. I will be collaborating with the talented Julie Spero – hair and makeup stylist extraordinaire. Together we will recreate some of the great album covers of all time.

Want To Get Involved?

We are looking for volunteers to participate in this year’s project. We will produce at least one cover image every month. If you have an album that you would like to model for- leave a comment below to sign up – or message us on Facebook. So think back to some of your favorite childhood albums and decide if there is one that would be a good fit for you – or maybe even a friend of yours. I will provide the photo session and Julie will provide the hair and makeup. You just have to supply the clothing, props, and location (if needed). That’s all there is to it. You will be presented with a full size album cover and have the coolest Facebook profile pic of all your friends. Sound like fun?

When Does It Start?

We’ve already done January’s album cover. It will be unveiled this weekend, so keep an eye out. Get your creative juices flowing- you could be next!!!

Let the games begin…
