Week 9
May 11
Ok, I’ve got to be honest. Up til this point, things were going pretty smoothly. I would come up with a concept, start to photograph it and about halfway through the shoot, come up with a better option and change directions. A little frustrating, maybe, but it seemed to be working. This week – not so much. Without question, this was the most difficult week so far – and that is including jumping through the snow last week!
Of course, I had waited until Monday to work on this week’s image – nothing new there. However, this was not the usual Monday. I had a session this morning and had to pack up everything to leave this afternoon. With only a few hours to get everything done, I seriously considered bailing out and just doing something tomorrow. Just being honest here!
Finally, I came up with a kind of dumb concept and decided to churn it out quickly – knowing that my “good” idea would appear during the session. Unfortunately, the session came and went…. no idea. I loaded the images into the computer and there was nothing… absolutely nothing worth using. Now I had even less time – and was out of ideas.
In full panic mode, I kind of threw in the towel and decided to just do a regular portrait – something I could at least use for promotion when I go to speak at conventions. Very pragmatic, huh? I load the images from this new session onto the computer and blah…. boring. I’m scrolling through, trying to find the “least boring” of the bunch and it FINALLY hit me.
Back to the studio for a third time, changed up the lighting and voila – Week 9 was born.

It was based on an old Babby Darin album cover I came across a while back. I loved the dramatic light – but the cover was just unexciting. I tried to recreate the shot, but take it to the next level. I added a little bit of sepia tone to the image, then added some texture – to give it a more antique look. Overall, I was pretty happy with how it turned out. More than anything, I’m just glad to be done with Week 9.
