Take A Bow

When the new year starts up, we are all eager to set goals and make a fresh start.  It doesn’t matter if you are trying to grow your business or shrink your waistline – it all starts with a plan.  Once you get this first step out of the way, there is a critical second step that many people forget – take a minute to take a bow.

We are a month and a half into 2011 at this point.  If you have stuck to your New Years resolutions so far, pat yourself on the back and take a bow.  You are probably ahead of about 80% of the others who set goals and quickly abandoned their plans.  Even if you aren’t seeing results yet, at least you know you are on the right track.  The key is to not get frustrated by a lack of results.  Instead, keep focused on the plan and wait for things to fall into place.

The funny thing about goals is that they often seem so impossible when you set them – only to turn out a little easier than expected.  My big goal this year was to get more serious about keeping my blog up to date.  I resolved to post at least twice a week… usually on Tuesday and Thursday.  I even charted out the first three months on my calendar and decided what I would talk about each day.  I was amazed that after a few weeks, I hadn’t missed a post.  I was churning them out twice a week and it was actually kind of easy.  This got me thinking that maybe twice wasn’t enough, so now I’m trying to figure out where to re-set my goal.  It’s a good problem to have, because even though twice a week seems easy, it is still over 100 posts a year!  They really do add up!  According to my WP Dashboard, I’ve only posted 203 times in the past few years, so 100 more is quite a feat.

The thing is, it’s all relative.  You have to set goals that are appropriate for you, but you also have to cheer yourself along every once in a while.  If you are still on track for your 2011 goals – good for you!  If not, take a breath, make a new plan and start again.  As the saying goes, “A journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step.”

  1. Hi Larry,

I had a hard time even setting my goals this year, so I had a late start. Like you the goals that I set a plan for are actually getting accomplished. Now that I realize that there are a couple that I need to actually plan out.

Congratulations on keeping up with the goal for your blog.
